A arte do grafite é uma forma de 
manifestação artística em espaços públicos. A definição mais popular diz que o grafite é um tipo de inscrição feita em paredes, dessa maneira temos relatos e vestígios do mesmo desde o Império Romano. Seu aparecimento na idade contemporânea se deu na década de 1970, em Nova Iorque, nos Estados Unidos. Alguns jovens começaram a deixar suas marcas nas paredes da cidade, algum tempo depois essas marcas evoluíram com técnicas e desenhos.
O grafite está ligado diretamente a vários movimentos, em especial ao Hip Hop. Para esse movimento, o grafite é a forma de expressar toda a opressão que a humanidade vive, principalmente os menos favorecidos, ou seja, o grafite reflete a realidade das ruas.
O grafite foi introduzido no Brasil no final da década de 1970, em São Paulo. Os brasileiros por sua vez não se contentaram com o grafite norte-americano, então começaram a incrementar a arte com um toque brasileiro, o estilo do grafite brasileiro é reconhecido entre os melhores de todo o mundo.
Muitas polêmicas giram em torno desse movimento artístico, pois de um lado o grafite é desempenhado com qualidade artística, e do outro não passa de poluição visual e vandalismo. A pichação ou vandalismo é caracterizado pelo ato de escrever em muros, edifícios, monumentos e vias públicas. Os materiais utilizados pelos grafiteiros vão desde tradicionais latas de spray até o látex.
Principais termos e gírias utilizadas nessa arte;
• Grafiteiro/writter: o artista que pinta.
• Bite: imitar o estilo de outro grafiteiro.
• Crew: é um conjunto de grafiteiros que se reúnem para pintar juntos.
• Tag: é assinatura de grafiteiro.
• Toy: é o grafiteiro iniciante.
• Spot: lugar onde é praticada a arte do grafitismo.
